Yeah, I know, I suck at keeping up with LJ. Amazing how my Internet hobbies diminish as my job becomes being on the Internet...

...anyway! Big day for me. I won the 801 Media t-shirt design contest I entered like a million years ago (O_o;), and I may get a letter to the editor in TIME magazine in the future. (If it happens it'll be my second, even, although my first under the pen name.)

On top of that, I wrote my first fanfic in eight thousand years today - just a short, cute, kinda cheesy Ghost Hunt one-shot. I find it amusing that both of the fics I have under this name are het, considering how much slash I used to write. Anyway, the fic is here if you're interested.

Whew. Busy busy ._.

Hisashiburi da yo~~~~ ;P

I wanted to chat for a bit about Vampire Knight, whose first volume came out recently and proceeded to outsell new volumes of One Piece and Black Cat. (See here).)

Vampire Knight is an uber-shoujo vampire/romance/drama manga. I stumbled across it in Lala, the mangabon that publishes Host Club, and started following it a bit. It's one of those series that is really soap opera-esque, but still addictive. The kind I'm somewhat ashamed to admit to reading. Like Marmalade Boy, except with vampires, and without possible incest.

So I'm actually pretty surprised to see it so high on the list, especially since it's only the first volume-- it hasn't been heavily scanlated or anything, so it's not like it had the built-in following that some manga do. I definitely think Host Club is superior to it, but OKHC is three spots below it in the sales.

I guess it's nice to know that I'm not the only person who likes it, but I'm kind of scared to seek out fans of it for fear that they're all giggly googly pubescents ._. Which is awfully stereotypical of me, but eh, there it is.

[Column] The Fangirl Rap

January 10th, 2007 (09:15 am)

No, I'm not talking about hip hop. I'm talking about the bad rap that we fangirls get. I bet you've experienced this: The conclusion-jumping ("you like Cloud? You like Sephiroth? YOU SLASH THEM DON'T YOU?"). The groans of fanboys whenever you say something about a BL manga. The assumption that you're just some 12-year-old ball of OMGSQUEE who thinks that yaoi is THEKINKIESTTHINGEVARLOLOL!!!

So let's talk about the bad reputation fangirls get, why it happens, and how to fight it. That's right...it's MANIFESTO TIME.

Read this column.

Wall Status: 80% Full

January 6th, 2007 (09:25 pm)

current mood: amused

One of these days I will get a stepstool and move a bunch of stuff to my cieling.

Piiiictures.Collapse )

So for those of you keeping count:

Host Club- 9 (including the little things; not pictured- stand-up calendar)
Haruhi- 8
Random Other Non-Anime Stuff- 4 (2 not pictured, a kitsune mask and photo of the moon).
FMA- 3
Night Head Genesis- 2
Harry Potter- 2
Pita Ten (real)- 1
Pita Ten (fake)- 1
Black Cat- 1
PuriPuri- 1 (though I only put it up 'cause it's Taishi Zaou)
Absolute Obedience- 1
Corda d'Oro- 1 (not pictured; a little stand-up calendar...has pics from multiple series; Corda is the Jan/Feb series)

GRAND TOTAL: 34 pieces of wall or stand-up art!

It's still mostly Host Club and Haruhi. Host Club because I adore it to death (volume 8 of the manga ROCKS); Haruhi because I like it quite a bit and there is SO MUCH STUFF FROM IT. I think I'm going to acquire a couple more Haruhi posters from jordanmarks too. o_o

Hell in a Rocket-Powered Handbasket

January 6th, 2007 (07:43 pm)

current mood: silly

I should be banned from all image-editing software.

I did some that I didn't post, too.

I even have one with Kyouya and Honey.

I am a bad, bad, bad person. :X

I don't even actually really *slash* this series. o_o I mean, I really think it's a Haruhi/Tamaki/Kyouya/Kaoru/Hikaru/Mori/Honey free-for-all. One girl can't handle all those boys ALL the time (shut up, 4chanians!), so I'm sure there's plenty of boy/boy lovin' going on, but I don't really like melodramatic one-on-one romance shipping in this series. o_o;;

2007 Bloggies

January 6th, 2007 (10:07 am)

The 2007 Bloggies nomination form is up. I didn't have something for every category, but I had a few.

Heehee, I did throw a nom for YaoiSuki in the "New Blogs" category, but I know no one else will XD

For best writing in a blog I nominated Gynocrat. Personal stuff aside, I love reading her blog. She has some really funny and usually very insightful content there. (Might be too niche-y to get enough other nominations though, I dunno?)

Nominated Joomla! and LiveJournal for best web app for blogging, BestWeekEver.tv for best entertainment blog, and whatjapanthinks for best kept secret blog.

Next year I hope to nominate a very different site for best new blog and best topical blog. ♥

Broccoli Delay

December 19th, 2006 (08:26 am)

Okay, this is NOT directly BL-related. Not even a tiny bit! But I thought it was very interesting: it's about why a particular Broccoli manga is getting delayed. (Thank MangaBlog for the link!)

When yaoi volumes get delayed, I often see fans gripe a lot. Heck, I gripe a bit myself. But occasionally I'll see a complaint where it seems like some fans think the companies are just being flaky or lazy.

If you occasionally feel that way, read this. This particular volume of Broccoli's is getting delayed due to a printing issue that becomes a sales/marketing issue that ALSO becomes a quality issue.

No laziness or flakiness, just an honest desire to produce something that people will be able to see at the bookstore and that is also high-quality printing.

...Just a bit of food for thought. :)

Discuss this article on our forums.

Also, a review of Saihoshi 2 will be up later today. Sorry for the delay, you know how the damn holidays are. (Why do we like these times again? Oh yeah, presents!)

So, I have this Christmas-y yaoi phrase I've been wanting to use all season, and I finally found an opportunity-- in YS's ad in Bent Magazine for December.

Say what?

December 13th, 2006 (07:02 am)

current mood: blank

I went to sign up on the new ComiPress forums and they have one of those prove-you're-human codes and...

...They must know it's me! O.o

In other news, my first column went up today. I think it's really awful and jumbled. Will have to plan better next time...
